Why we should OPPOSE Murtha for Majority Leader

There are numerous reasons due to his conservatism.  You can surf over to americablog for a brief list:
http://www.americablog.blogspot.com/

Anyway, the main reason is he's on CREW's list of corrupt House members.

If we're going to clean up the House, institute real ethics reform, and set an example by running a clean ship, we cannot make an allegedly corrupt person like Murtha Majority Leader.

I don't know much about Hoyer.  I've heard he's a Blue Dog and doesn't work well with Nancy.  But, we don't need an ethics scandal taking our Majority Leader down.

So, write your Congressman and ask him to support Hoyer.

And, while you're at it, send some love Karen Carter's way, as she is in a runoff against the corrupt William Jefferson:

Let's keep our House clean!

It seems to me both of these guys potentially have serious ethics problems. I agree that the CREW listing is pretty damning -- it's unfortunate that Murtha has become such a folk hero. Wish there was a third viable choice.

Pelosi has stated that ethics reform is the first thing on th agenda. I believe she means it, and I think some of the new committee chairs will keep her honest if she somehow doesn't. Quote from the 'draining the swamp' article:

Life is often hard that way.

Murtha's "folk hero" status is hard earned. Murtha stood up when others cowered in their seats. Murtha then took the slings and arrows from the Swift Boaters while his friends were stabbing him in the back.

Unfortunately the charges of corruption are far from the only problem.  Murtha's reactionary voting record even calls into question Pelosi's commitment to reform.

I am very glad I don't have to choose.

Best,  Terry

Let's Support Murtha (none / 0)

We need inspirational leadership for Majority Leader and I whole-heartedly agree that Murtha's folk hero status is hard earned. There is no issue more pressing than changing our policy in Iraq, to start to pull back from the death, destruction, chaos. John Murtha is the best Congressional spokesman for this change.

In contrast we have Steny Hoyer who ""told colleagues that Pelosi's recent endorsement of a speedy withdrawal ... could backfire on the party."

I am disturbed about the reported ethical problems involving Murtha, but I am willing to resolve this by us being vigilant about his future behavior.

We need to affect the policy in Iraq. Murtha is the one who can do that.

Re: Why should we OPPOSE Murtha? (none / 0)

I used the links, and I read nothing but vague generalities on the ethics front.  So, John Murtha is corrupt becasue someone says he his?  As for his conservative voting record, it will provide a balanced leadership team all House Democrats can support.  After all, without districts like GA-08, NC-11, and IN-09(?), cobbling together a majority becomes a little more problematic.

There's more detailed information on Murtha's ethical problems.
CREW is a legit organization.  They helped take down Delay, and they worked to push investigations into numerous other House members.

After finally gaining the majority, it would be very bad for our majority leader to get hit with a serious ethics investigation, or worse.

I appreciate what Murtha did on Iraq as much as anyone, but I can't stand the idea of our Majority Leader being corrupt.  If we're going to show America that we are BETTER than the Republicans, we need to keep our own House clean.
